What exactly does that 2 letter code that designate every jeep model stand for. Well we have your answer. The two character codes are designated as follows.

CJ2 through CJ8, a.k.a, “Civilian Jeep”

DJ – Postal or “Dispatch” Jeep

MJ – Commanche

SJ – Wagoneer (Old Cherokee)

YJ – 1987-95 Wrangler (Wrangler YJ’s sold in 1996 were to 1995 spec)

TJ – 1997 and current Wrangler

VJ – The Jeepster

XJ – Cherokee

ZJ – Grand Cherokee (up to 1998)

WJ – Grand Cherokee (1999 on)

KJ – Liberty (2002+)

LJ – Wrangler Unlimited (2004 – 2006)

  1. Wow..thanks ;) I know a couple of people who could use that list… And good luck on getting your Jeep. You know, I heard the new Wrangler type models are supposed to be put on the market with 33″ tires!!! I’m kinda jealous since I had to PAY for mine after the fact. Well..I guess stuff just keeps getting better and Jeeps are no exception.

  2. The Wrangler Unlimited, model years 2004 – 2006 is coded the “LJ”.
